About the African Cape Buffalo
Cape Buffalo are massive, heavily built and powerful. They inhabit the forests, woodlands, swamps, and savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa. They move in large herds, sometimes numbering up to a thousand animals. Occasionally old bulls will lead a solitary life, these are known as “Dugga Boys.”
Four sub-species of African Buffalo have been recognized and reflect the different type of regions and habitats they live in: Forest Buffalo, West African Savanna Buffalo, Central African Savanna Buffalo, and Southern Savanna Buffalo. The forest buffalo are smaller than those found in the savanna.
Prize trophies for hunters, these large and often dangerous animals are unpredictable and can be deadly if cornered or wounded. Buffalo are one of the only animals that purposefully circle back onto their trail to "hunt" the pursuer. Cape buffalo are large, adults stand 4-6 feet tall, and males can weigh in at over 1500 lbs. They sport large and heavy horns with a mature bull developing a hard, gnarled “boss.” Cape Buffalo are said to have killed more big game hunters than any other animal in Africa and are one of Africa's most dangerous animals. Sight and hearing are both rather poor, but the scent is well developed in buffaloes.
