About the Bat-Eared Fox
Bat-eared foxes are small African foxes known for their enormous ears. Taxidermy mounts of the Bat-eared fox are hard to find. Their ears grow to be over 5 inches tall and are full of blood vessels that help keep the fox cool by shedding heat. They also give the animal a great sense of hearing. The Bat-eared fox is sandy gray with lighter fur on their belly and dark fur around their eyes, muzzle, back of ears, feet, and the tip of their bushy tail. They have white or buff colored hair fur on the inside of their ears and a band of dark fur across their forehead. They grow to 18 to 26 inches in length and can weigh between 7 to 12 pounds.
The Bat-eared fox lives eastern and southern Africa in the short grass savannahs and scrublands. Bat-eared foxes live in groups and the families live in dens and tunnels they dig within their territories that overlap with other families and span about 200 acres. About 70% of the Bat-eared fox’s diet consists of insects including termites, dung beetles, grasshoppers, spiders, and millipedes. They also eat scorpions, rodents, lizards, fruits, and eggs.
They have more teeth than most animals. They have three upper molars and four lower molars while other members of the dog family only have two upper molars and three lower molars on each side.
